Tom Miller’s career began at Eastman Kodak where he taught color photography. He
held several positions of importance until his retirement in 1979. However, it was his
love of color photography that led him to watercolor painting. On vacation in Cape
Ann, MA, he sought out instruction from the master landscape artist, Carl Peters, who quickly became Miller’s mentor.
Painting plenair in Pittsford, Victor and Fairport, as well as Rockport and Gloucester, MA, he used spontaneous washes and brushstrokes, combined with controlled detail to capture the unique atmosphere of his favorite places. Both Miller and Peters lived and worked in the Rochester area and developed a close friendship. This bond later resulted in exhibitions of Peters’ work and a book published by the University of Rochester Press (1999) and authored by Richard H. Love, entitled “Carl W. Peters: American Scene Painter from Rochester to Rockport.” The book was dedicated to Miller.
After the passing of Peters, Miller became even more dedicated to watercolor painting. He continued lessons and began teaching at the Memorial Art Gallery. Although he received a number of awards for his work, Miller’s true love was to teach others the styles and techniques that
